 BOB BAKER
Bob Baker was a B-Western star at Universal in ‘38-‘39. There were no Bob Baker comic books as such, but Baker did appear in comic books for a series of his first five Westerns adapted into comic book form in Dell’s FUNNIES #23-27, all in 1938.
As you’ll see from the pages reproduced here, the semi-talented Richard Rodgers who drew all five Baker stories didn’t even try to replicate Baker’s likeness.
“Courage of the West” was adapted in FUNNIES #23 (August ‘38), released by Universal in December ‘37. FUNNIES #24 (September ‘38) adapted “Singing Outlaw”, released by Universal in January ‘38. “Border Wolves” ran in FUNNIES #25 (October ‘38), released
by Universal eight months earlier in February ‘38. “Western Trails”, released by
Universal in June ‘38, saw publication in FUNNIES #26 (Nov. ‘38) and “The Last Stand”, released by Universal in April ‘38, appeared in FUNNIES #27 (Dec. ‘38). All five ran six pages each. With #28 Dell’s FUNNIES changed its format, abandoning the Baker movie adaptations.
Baker went on to star in seven more B-Westerns, ending with “Phantom Stage” in February ‘39. He then co-starred with Johnny Mack Brown in six at Universal in ‘39-‘40.
