HAWKEYE
There was a Dell one-shot based on the John Hart/ Lon Chaney Jr. TV series “Hawkeye and the Last of the Mohicans”. 39 episodes were filmed in Canada with Hart as Hawkeye and Chaney as Chingachgook.
The two stories in Dell Four Color #884 (March ‘58) are based on two ‘57 TV episodes, “False Witness” and “Powder Keg”. Full color cover and inside front cover b/w photo of Hart and ChaneSWy.
Art, with absolutely no resemblance to Lon Chaney Jr. and only passable John Hart, was by Bob Jenney, born in 1914 in White Plains, NY. Graduating from Pratt Institute School of Art in Brooklyn, Jenney illustrated several juvenile books before signing on
with DC Comics and others in ‘39. After WWII Navy service, Jenney worked on art for various pulp magazines and at Dell on CISCO KID, HAWKEYE and movie adaptations of “The Oklahoman”, “Big Land”, “Fastest Gun Alive” and “The Last Hunt” and later drew the syndicated “Bringing Up Father” newspaper strip (‘82). He retired to Medford, OR, where he died in 2000.
In Fine, copies are $18. (Thanx in part to Steinar Adland.)
